As part of their state-wide May Day actions, hotel workers’ unions in Goa held a protest action and press conference outside the Grand Hyatt Goa in Bambolim. The unions are members of the IUF-affiliated Hotel Employees Federation of India (HEFOI), which pledged support for the “Hyatt Hurts!” campaign in the US.
Speaking to local media, General Secretary of HEFOI, Subash Jorge explained the reasons why the IUF-affiliated UNITE HERE is campaigning against Hyatt and focused especially on the impact of outsourcing and casualization on workers’ job security, health and livelihoods.
The main demands of hotel workers in Goa on May 1st centred on the extenszive use of contract labour by hotels, including luxury resorts like the Grand Hyatt. The unions called for an end to the abusive labour contract system.
